Understanding Wellness Scores

Wellness Score Scale (1-10)

7.0-10.0 Excellent Outstanding wellness, minimal support needed
5.0-6.9 Good Healthy wellness, occasional support beneficial
3.0-4.9 Moderate Average wellness, regular support recommended
1.0-2.9 Needs Attention Below average, immediate support needed

Score Context

  • Higher scores (7.0-10.0) indicate better overall wellness and fewer support needs
  • Lower scores (1.0-2.9) suggest areas where students need more support and resources
  • Scores are calculated from survey responses across multiple wellness dimensions
  • Trends over time help identify improving or declining wellness patterns
  • Location & team-specific scores help target resources to areas with greatest need

Research Methodology & Validation

Our wellness assessment system uses a 1-10 rating scale for survey questions, with calculated wellness scores ranging 1-10. This approach is grounded in established psychological research and validated assessment instruments:

  • Pitt Wellness Scale - A validated Likert scale developed specifically for university environments, measuring seven wellness domains with Cronbach's alpha reliability ranging from 0.714 to 0.892 (PMC7221649)
  • WHO Well-Being Index - A widely-used scale assessing psychological well-being, validated across diverse populations and demonstrating strong psychometric properties (Karger 2015)
  • Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scales - Established Likert scales measuring six dimensions of wellness, with extensive validation in academic settings (PMC6292717)
  • Visual Analog Scales (VAS) - Widely validated for assessing subjective wellness states, offering greater sensitivity and granularity in responses (PMC4110524)
  • Multi-Dimensional Assessment vs. NPS - Unlike single-metric approaches such as Net Promoter Score (NPS), multi-dimensional wellness scales demonstrate superior predictive validity and clinical utility. Research shows that comprehensive wellness assessments capture nuanced psychological states that simple satisfaction metrics cannot (Frontiers in Psychology 2020). Our 1-10 scale integrates multiple wellness dimensions (stress, mood, energy, social connectedness) rather than relying on a single satisfaction question, providing actionable insights for targeted interventions.

Scale Advantages: The 1-10 rating scale for individual questions provides optimal balance between simplicity and sensitivity, offering greater granularity than traditional 5-point scales while ensuring high response rates and capturing meaningful wellness variations. The calculated wellness scores (also 1-10) aggregate multiple dimensions into an actionable metric. Unlike simple satisfaction metrics (e.g., NPS), our multi-dimensional approach combines validated psychological constructs, enabling evidence-based decision-making and targeted resource allocation. This methodology aligns with modern practices in psychological assessment and facilitates reliable trend analysis over time.
